Are there any prerequisites for the classes?
No prior experience is needed. Every class starts with the fundamentals and is built to be beginner-friendly, so you’re welcome whether you’ve never handled a firearm or you’ve been shooting for years. Come as you are — you won’t be rushed or talked down to.
One suggestion if you’re brand new to handguns: take Basic Handguns before the Pistol Safety & Carry (Michigan CPL) class. The CPL includes a live-fire range qualification, and that shouldn’t be your very first time shooting — Basic Handguns gives you that foundation first.
What do I need for class?
For the live-fire handgun classes — Basic Handguns and Pistol Safety & Carry (Michigan CPL) — you’ll need:
- Eye and ear protection
- A handgun
- 50 rounds of factory ammunition
You can rent or buy any of these at the range, or bring your own. If you bring your own firearm, it must stay unloaded and in a case until the live-fire portion of class.
Closed-toe shoes and a high-collared shirt (no tank tops) are required for any class with a live-fire portion.
For any class, it also helps to bring a notebook and pen for taking notes — and a willingness to learn.
Emergency First Aid Fundamentals has no equipment requirements — just bring yourself.
